Feb. 5, 1992...The lost city of Ubar, called "the Atlantis of the Sands" by Lawrence of Arabia, has been found in remote southern Oman using pictures taken from space shuttle Challenger, explorers said Tuesday. The city is referred to as Iram, the "city of towers" in the Holy Quran, Surah Al-Fajr. Below we reproduce the English translation of part of the Surah by Abdullah Yusuf Ali.
The researchers speculate that the city may have been the earliest known shipping center for frankincense, a fragrant gum resin harvested farther south. The researchers have to overcome sandstorms and deadly vipers to locate the city's octagon-shaped stone walls, 6- to 8-foot-tall remnants of seven of its eight 30-foot-tall mud-brick towers, various rooms, frankincense burners and thousands of pieces of pottery.
Researchers found the city by tracing ancient desert roads detected in pictures taken from several spacecraft, including radar and optical cameras carried by Challenger in October 1984, said Ronald Blom, a geologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. According to Abdullah Yusuf Ali, the city of Iram was the capital of the nation of Ad. Evidence indicates that the city fell into a sinkhole created when an underground limestone cavern collapsed. According to legend, Ubar was destroyed during a disaster about C.E. 100 and was buried by sand. The city probably had fewer than 100 residents, but was surrounded by numerous campsites marked by pottery, firepits and charcoal.
Previous efforts to find Ubar in Oman's dunes failed in 1930, 1947 and 1953.

By the Break of Day; By the Nights twice five; By the Even and Odd (contrasted); And by the Night when it passeth away; Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the `Ad (people); Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars; The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley? And with Pharaoh, Lord of Stakes? (All) these transgressed Beyond bounds in the lands. And heaped therein Mischief (on mischief). Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisement: For thy Lord is (As a Guardian) on a watch-tower. (Holy Quran,Surah Al-Fajr, The Dawn,89:1-89:14)

Al-Qur’aan, the main source of the Islamic faith, is a book believed by Muslims, to be of completely Divine origin. Muslims also believe that it contains guidance for all mankind. Since the message of the Qur’aan is believed to be for all times, it should be relevant to every age. Does the Qur’aan pass this test? Here, I intend to give an objective analysis of the Muslim belief regarding the Divine origin of the Qur’aan, in the light of established scientific discoveries.
The Big Bang ! Currently, the Big Bang model of the origin of the universe is the cosmological paradigm most widely accepted by astronomers. It holds that about 15 billion years ago the universe began with the explosive expansion of a single, extremely dense matter, the primordial mass. Only after the development of radio telescopes in 1937 that, the necessary observational precision was achieved in order for astronomers to arrive at the above conclusion. What does the Quran say about our universe's origin? "Do not the unbelievers see that the Heavens and the earth were joined together, then We split them apart." Quran(21:30)Expanding UniverseIn 1925, Edwin Hubble (after whom the Hubble Space telescope is named) provided the observational evidence for the expansion of the universe. Stephen Hawking (author of 'A Brief History of Time') states: "The universe is not static, as had previously been thought, it is expanding". So what did God reveal in the Quran, 1400 years ago?"And the firmament, We constructed with power and skill and verily We are expanding it" (Quran51:47)The Existence of Sun's OrbitAncient people use to believe that the Sun revolves around the earth. Later, Nicholas Copernicus in 1512, laid his Heliocentric Theory of Planetary motion, which placed the sun motionless in the center of the solar system with all the planets revolving around it. Modern science tells us now that the sun too is not still, but is in motion.The sun traveling at roughly 150 miles per second takes about 200 million years to complete one revolution around the center of our Milky Way Galaxy and 25 days to make one complete rotation around its own axis. See how beautifully and accurately God revealed this phenomenon in the Quran"It is He who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon, all (the celestial bodies) swim along, each in its orbit with its own motion." (Quran 21:33)EmbryologyThe Dutch naturalist Anthony van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) produced lenses powerful enough to prove that many tiny creatures are not spontaneously generated but are produced from eggs. The science of Embryology as we know it today did not discover many of the detailed aspects of human embryonic development until the 1970s, using powerful microscopes, ultra sound and fiber optics technology. See how the Quran described the stages of embryonic development."God fashioned man from a small quantity (of sperm)" (16:4) Fertilization takes place with only one sperm among several tens of million produced by man. "Then We placed him as a drop in a place of rest" Quran(23:13) Implantation of the blastocyst in the uterus."Then We made the drop into a leech like structure..." Quran(23:14) This resemblance of the human embryo to a leech is an appropriate description of the human embryo from days 7-24, when it clings to the endometrium of the uterus."And He (God) gave you hearing and sight and feeling and understanding."
